Dark Canyon Wilderness is a huge remote area in southeastern Utah There are no busy roads no crowds just big red cliffs deep canyons and lots of peace It really feels like you are far away from everything
Why Is It Called Dark Canyon
Its called Dark Canyon because in some places the canyon is very narrow and deep so the sun hardly reaches the bottom That means it stays cool and shaded most of the time which gives it a mysterious and beautiful atmosphere
The Hike Experience
I started my hike on the Sundance Trail and I have to say it was pretty steep and rocky going down so be ready for a good workout But when you reach the bottom the calm and beauty of the place makes it all worth it
Inside the canyon there is no real path You just follow the dry riverbed climb over rocks and sometimes walk on soft sand It feels like exploring a secret world
What I Saw Along the Way
Along the way I saw some really cool things like ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks by Native people I also saw huge red cliffs glowing in the sunlight and wild bighorn sheep watching me from high above At night the sky was full of stars like I had never seen before because there is no city light anywhere nearby

Some interesting facts about the place are that outlaws like Butch Cassidy are said to have hidden in these canyons Some parts are so narrow that you have to squeeze through sideways Also dont expect any phone signal your phone will only work as a camera here

If you decide to go there make sure to bring plenty of water or a filter because some parts are very dry Use a good map or GPS because there are no signs Also tell someone where you are going This is a real wilderness adventure and not an easy walk
